Overview

GLC-LH-SMD complies with IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-LX and plugs into any Cisco Gigabit SFP port. It reaches 10 km on standard G.652 single-mode fibre and 550 m on 62.5 or 50 µm multimode fibre; on multimode links Cisco requires a mode-conditioning patch cord at each end. The duplex LC/PC connector does not accept APC patch cords.

The D suffix marks the version with DOM to SFF-8472, so the host can read transmit and receive power, temperature, laser bias and supply voltage. It is rated for the extended temperature range of -5 to 85°C, which suits most indoor and many cabinet installs. Check host support in Cisco's compatibility tables.

Edition and part numbers

Cisco rates the older GLC-LH-SM for the commercial range, while GLC-LH-SMD is rated for the extended range of -5 to 85°C. SFP-GE-L is a similar extended rated LX part, and GLC-LX-SM-RGD is the industrial rated version for -40°C sites.

Questions about the GLC-LH-SMD

Can I use it on multimode fibre?
Yes, up to 550 m, but Cisco requires a mode-conditioning patch cord on multimode links to meet the specification.
Does it need an attenuator?
No attenuator is specified for 1000BASE-LX/LH. Its receive range of -3 to -20 dBm covers links from the 2 m minimum up to 10 km.
